Beer Increases Male Fertility
Like you need another excuse to crack open a cold one…
Well, now that the clever chaps in white coats have figured that your lineage may depend on it, you can drink beer for the children.
A study done at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA has illustrated very preliminary findings that a pint of beer a day could increase male fertility, according to the Daily Mail. The study examined 105 men, all of whom had wives or girlfriends undergoing IVF at the time, with an extensive dietary survey.
The results indicated that those who drank the most alcohol (though even the highest consumption of the group was fairly moderate, at the equivalent of just over a pint of beer a day) had double the chance of conception through IVF than those who drank the least. Specifically, those who consumed 3 “units” of alcohol daily had a 57% chance of becoming a father, while those who kept the drinks to a minimum had just a 28% chance.
One expert, Dr. Allan Pacey of Sheffield University, explained that a possible reason behind this link may be rooted in mental state. “Moderate social drinking can be of benefit for couples trying to conceive either naturally or during assisted conception because it helps to reduce stress,” he says.
Further research is obviously needed, and while the men in the white coats stare into their microscopes, we’re quite happy to stare into the bottom of a pint glass. All in the name of procreation.
Do it for the children.
