South African Craft Beer Pub Guide: Capital Craft

Capital Craft

Capital Craft

Located in Menlo Park, Capital Craft is the spot for a full on craft beer experience in Pretoria. A true craft beer bar, Capital has made it their mission to promote industry in South Africa through customer education, brewing demonstrations, food pairing, and offering a wide variety of styles from breweries all over the world. They are, as they claim to be, a beer academy for those looking to expand their knowledge.

The décor is warm and comfortable with lots of wood, exposed brick and a touch of a steampunk/industrial vibe. There’s always a bit of a crowd, and long sessions with pints, snacks and big tables are commonplace. Outdoor seating is also available for relaxing summer evenings.

The food, from the ground up, is made to complement the beer on offer. German sausages, burgers and pub starters are the highlights, and the staff are happy to suggest a beer pairing to go with your meal.

With 17 beers on tap, including King’s Blockhouse IPA, you’re spoiled for choice. Add to that another 40 local and 45 international bottled craft offerings, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better selection in Pretoria. There’s also a full bar of the hard stuff if you’re looking for something with a bit more kick.

Our Top 3 Food Picks:

Crafty Bitch- German sausage with beer glazed caramelised onions, dijon mustard on a bed of rocket and sun blushed tomatoes topped with parmesan shavings and our home made green sweet chilli sauce on the side.

Pastrami Bomb – Toasted sourdough bread topped with apple chutney, our home smoked pastrami, emmental cheese and a fresh apple slices.

The Big Smoke – 200g free range beef patty smoked in our in house smoker called the Iron Maiden. Smoked mozzarella, tomato relish, mayo, tomato, onion, pickles & lettuce.

Our Top DPBC Beer and Food Pairing: The Big Smoke with King’s Blockhouse IPA

There are burgers, and then there is The Big Smoke. Infused with real smoke flavour, this tank of a meal pairs perfectly with The King’s Blockhouse IPA. The bright, hoppy punch helps to cut through the richness of the burger, and we think you’ll need at least a couple of pints to get through this monster.
