South African Craft Beer Pub Guide: The Griffin

The Griffin

Each week we profile the best places in South Africa to drink craft beer. This week, we visit The Griffin.

If there’s one thing the Griffin knows, it’s craft beer. Their extensive collection, including Devil’s Peak, range from local favourites to unique imports.

Tucked away in Illovo Junction in Joburg, this ultra-cool, contemporary gastropub focuses on serving fresh, seasonal food in a comfortable and familiar atmosphere.

“Our food philosophy is pretty straight forward. It’s all about getting the best quality ingredients and letting them speak for themselves through beautiful, simple, flavoursome food.”

The lunch specials, served Tuesday to Friday, offer everything from simple sliders to a 200g dry-aged rump steak. And don’t miss out on the “After Graft Craft Special,” Tues-Thurs, 2 for 1 drink specials!

Their online reservation system makes grabbing a table a snap, so book ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Our Top 3 Food Picks:

Sliders – Mini chicken prego with guacamole

Griffin Burger – Smoked bacon aioli, red onion relish, skin on chips, homemade tomato ketchup

Steak Sandwich – On focaccia with roasted peppers, watercress and remoulade

Our Top DPBC Beer and Food Pairing: Griffin Burger with First Light Golden Ale

It was a tough call between the burger and the sliders. When in doubt, the sliders offer a lot of variety in delightful little packages. But sometimes you know exactly what you want, and that’s a delicious burger with an ice cold session ale. These two were made for each other.
