International IPA Day
Today is IPA Day.
But wait, why does IPA get it’s own special day when we don’t toast, say, Stouts, or celebrate a Lager Day?
India Pale Ale get so much credit because it’s without a doubt the hoppiest day of the year.
Seriously though, beer drinkers, brewers and bars use the day to collectively toast what is regarded as craft beer’s most iconic style.
Here’s a quick history lesson. Back in the day colonial Britain had a problem where their citizens living in India couldn’t get good British ale and any attempts to ship it in resulted in spoilage. A brew with a generous amount of hops to protect it from heat and motion was the solution. When a ship leaving London with the India Pale Ale on board was wrecked, the casks were sold in England, which was a hit, and the rest, as they say, is history.
