The Power and the Glory
Situated at the corner of Kloof Nek and Burnside roads, The Power and the Glory is a cool mix of café, bar, and coffee shop. At any given time, on any given day, there’s at least a dozen people perched comfortably on bar stools and folding chairs as they work, read, write and socialise while the busy street bustles by.
A long-time favourite for the young and creative, P&G is always packed and buzzing – day or night. The café and main seating area is separated from the bar, but the two spaces work very well together and the transition from one to the other is seamless. If the weather is nice, patrons can enjoy a bit of covered outdoor seating as well.
The décor has a worn in, comfortable feel. It forgoes frills for a pragmatic approach that seems to suit the clientele who most frequent. Because of the layout and available space, there’s always a since of warmth. This makes for a brilliant bar experience, but also lends itself to a cup of hot chocolate on a cold Cape morning.
Breakfast is served until 11 and includes oats, muesli and yoghurt, eggs, toast and wide range of “build your own” breakfast sandwiches. There are also sandwiches, pies, salads and a myriad of other options for afternoon and evening. Ordering at the counter keeps things simple.
As one of the first bars in Cape Town to stock craft beer, The Power and the Glory has a great selection of bottled and draft beers. You can pick up a bottle of First Light, King’s Blockhouse, or one of many other Cape Town favourites. There’s also top shelf if you’re looking for something with a little more kick.
Our Top 3 Food Picks:
Oats – Our favourite breakfast – warm oats with cinnamon and cardamom.
Sandwiches – Streaky bacon with peanut butter and banana
Beef Pie – Slow-cooked Chalmar beef and milk-stout pie
Our Top DPBC Beer and Food Pairing: Beef pie with First Light Golden Ale
This is no ordinary pie. Not all beer is created equal and neither is all beef. Chalmar is something special, and it really shows in P&G’s beef pie. Come hungry because this thing packs a punch. Paired with a light, crisp First Light, you can’t go wrong with this instant classic.
