South African Craft Beer Pub Guide: Social on Main

Social on Main

Social on Main | DPBC Craft Beer Pub Guide

Each week we profile the best places in South Africa to drink craft beer. This week, we visit Social on Main in Joburg.

This slick, polished cocktail bar, with its comfortable atmosphere, vibey outdoor deck and delicious food, is quickly becoming a favourite spot for Joburg bar hoppers.

Located in the heart of Byanston, Social on Main offers a myriad of cocktails and craft beers. From Basil and Black Pepper G&T’s to our very own King’s Blockhouse IPA, the drinks menu alone warrants a visit. They also have a snacks and small plates menu that makes your typical pub’s offerings look like amateur hour.

Sunday afternoons boast some of the best vibes with live music from 14h00-18h00. These “Summer Sessions” are free entry and fill up quick, so be sure to book your table well in advance!

Our Top 3 Food Picks:

Popcorn with flavour – Bacon dust – it’s a thing, and they put it on their popcorn

Jalapeno Poppers – Stuffed with cheddar and cream cheese, home smoked bacon bits, served with mint, cucumber and yogurt dip

Sharing Boards – From the Farm – Prosciutto, salami, country ham, mature cheddar, chicken liver pate, crispy flat bread, mini pickles and sweet preserve

Our Top DPBC Beer and Food Pairing: Jalapeno Poppers with King’s Blockhouse IPA

When done right, jalapeno poppers can be a beer drinker’s best friend. Stuffing them with bacon bits, cheddar and cream cheese is a damn good direction to go. These hot (but not too hot), crunchy, creamy, morsels are the perfect companion to the hoppy, bitter, punchy King’s Blockhouse. You’re going to want to go with a 500ml on this one. By the time that’s finished, you’ll be ready for a second round of poppers.
